This is a rough work tape of one of my newest songs. It’s a solo write called “More Than My Religion”. Lyrics have always been challenging for me, but hopefully, this most recent draft captures the heart of the song. There is a difference between having a religion and a relationship with God. Any feedback is welcome.

Verse 1
I never saw your face but I heard about your story
About a man who saved the world from all its sins
But I never knew what it meant for someone like me to be forgiven
CHORUS
I lived my life trying to fix the hurt inside of me
But never could give up the guilt and be free
I followed you in every way, but never gave my heart
It was not until I let you in, when I felt your power
Because you are more, than anything I’ve done
You are more than my religion
Verse 2
I think about my past and all the choices I made
When my life had crashed, I felt I walked alone
I couldn’t see what you did.
You carried me through the pain and hardship.
CHORUS
I lived my life trying to fix the hurt inside of me
But never could give up the guilt and be free
I followed you in every way, but never gave my heart
It was not until I let you in, when I felt your power
Bridge
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(Yes, you are more)
(You are more) More than what I’d do or say
(You are more) To be worthy of your grace
(You are more) You’re the reason I have faith
(You are more) You’re everything in every way
(You are more) More than the mistakes I’ve made
(You are more) More than all the guilt and shame
(You are more) Your blood washed my sins away
(You are more) This is how it feels to be saved
CHORUS
I lived my life trying to fix the hurt inside of me
But never could give up the guilt and be free
I followed you in every way, but never gave my heart
It was not until I let you in, when I felt your power
Because you are more, than anything I’ve done
You are more than my religion
